Garage Crawl, 2016
The “Garage Crawl” was a series of gigs that took place in garages around the vibrant town of Aro Valley. We wanted to bring the music scene back to its roots and hosted an event in which locals and other music appreciators could become part of a tradition which connects us back to where so many good bands started out; the humble garage. We drew inspiration from the D.I.Y scene that seems to be taking the music industry in new directions and in particular the New Orleans street culture and the New Zealand shed culture.
Garage Crawl, the idea, was conceived by one member who was looking directly into New Orleans culture and the street performances at the time and noticing the absence of this type of event here wondered what it would be like apply these themes in New Zealand culture.
As many are aware many bands start out practicing in garages and so we wanted to bring this ascetic and humbleness back by staging events directly in garages. Because Wellington is so enriched and in a way obsessed with craft beer the original idea was to tie the music and the beer together -- both music and beer can begin in garages and are crafts that are often understated. Making them available to the general public at an affordable and new but old style is something we want to aim to do in the future.
Overall we’re extremely pleased with the first Garage Crawl but see it too as a successful ‘test run’ paving the way for what we hope to be an innovative, exciting, new Wellington festival.
